Mille Atoll Island being shelled between the 18th of
August, just before formal negotiations began, and the 22nd when Japan accepted
unconditional surrender terms for Mille. Woody Story, crewmember of the USS Levy DE 162, describes the events in this photo: "We were trying to shoot out the tops of
their trees to reduce their food supply."
On one trip to the island to pick up negotiators, the USS Levy whale boat was fired upon,
returned fire and the ship also launched shells.
