| Sadly, the convention comes to a close today. The traditional
Memorial Service took place at 0900 hours. Fifteen US Navy and 17 Royal
Navy ships and their sailors were remembered and honored. Tears and
moments of silence spoke louder than any words spoken. A gentleman
seated beside me was overcome with emotion. He apologized for his tears.
I respectfully told him his apologize was not necessary and took the
opportunity to thank him for all he did for me and our Country. The
smile that replaced his tears is something I will never forget. Following the service, shipmates, friends and family gathered, knowing the time together was quickly ending. Many people spent a quiet afternoon on the beach, while others remained in the hotel lobby and convention center. I had the pleasure of meeting the hotel Sales Manager, Debbie Todd. Debbie has been manager for 12 years and worked with Dori Glasser and Tom Kidd to plan every detail of the convention. "This group is very special and like a family to me", Debbie stated. Her father, step-father and brother served in the US military. "The members of DESA are a wonderful group of men and it has been my honor to help plan this convention. It is the least I can do for these fine men who sacrificed so much for me", Debbie tearfully stated. Well Done, Debbie. The closing banquet is drawing near and I will be in attendance. I will be unable to post photos tonight and I apologize. I must leave at daylight in the morning for the drive home. I plan to post the photos of tonight's gala event on Saturday. I am sworn to secrecy about the events of the evening, but I will tell you that it will be grand! Take Care until I return on Saturday. |
