Thursday Evening October 17, 2002 |
| The convention ended with a splendid banquet. With so many in attendance, the hotel had to use 3 dining rooms to accommodate everyone. After dinner, everyone gathered in the
main dining room for what they thought would be a simple evening of final visitation with friends and shipmates and dancing. However, there was more to the evening and the event
was kept top secret. The event began with the band playing "Anchors Aweigh" and a huge American flay unfurled from the ceiling. DESA directors and staff and Auxiliary members paraded into the room waving flags and singing. From the opposite side of the room, members of the hotel staff entered pushing a cart with a large ship model covered in cake icing and lighted sparklers! A confetti cannon was located next to the band and exploded, filling the area with fluttering dazzling confetti. Also, a smoke machine filled the area with a soft fog. Gasps, applause and cheering by the audience filled the room to a deafening level. Then, everyone joined in singing "God Bless American". It was a spectacular event! The evening continued with dancing and ended with final farewells. Convention 2002 was a tremendous success and enjoyed by all. Photos Page 1 | Page 2 |
